Two years ago the people of Portsmouth voted to change the make up of the city council, and two reasons stand in my mind as to why. One of them was number of councilors who seemed to vote almost in unison for burdensome ordinances. Remember all of those 8-1 votes, the single “no vote” consistently cast by Rick Becksted?
The second issue was the decision of the 2018 council to ignore a petition signed by 600 residents requesting a second look at the McIntyre building contract before awarding it. In spite of that, the council proceeded to sign the McIntyre contract anyway after many of them had lost their reelection bid or decided not to run for another term, leaving the current city council to deal with the fall out. Does it begin to sound familiar?
When I look at the candidates presently running for city council, I see either a great deal of longevity and experience in city matters or the complete opposite. Many of the candidates offered by Progress Portsmouth have lots of plans and ideas but are single issue focused. Not many seem to know how the city works or the details of managing it.
On November 2, please cast your vote to keep Portsmouth working for the people and re-elect those in the current city council who have served us well during very difficult times.
